RISK IN CABS AND TRANSPORTATION: LOW

Playa del Carmen is not so huge, and you can walk to the most visited parts, but sometimes you may have to use public transportation or a cab. Cabs do not have meters, and prices vary. If you decide to drive, be aware that traffic signs are not respected. The level of crime on buses and roads is high, especially after dark.

As far as not very serious crimes are concerned, pickpocketing is the most common. The only way to protect yourself is to watch your things and be aware of your surroundings, as thieves often work in collaboration with cab drivers. Travelers should never use cabs hailed on the street.

Besides the hurricane season that lasts from June to November, Playa del Carmen is prone to floods and earthquakes. Adverse weather and tsunamis, as well as several active volcanoes, are possible natural disasters.

Unlike pickpocketing, kidnapping and mugging are very rare. There have been cases of express kidnapping, and victims were forced to withdraw money from ATMs. Tourists are the least targeted, but they need to be careful.

Currency – The Mexican Peso is the official currency of Playa del Carmen. Mexico is not too expensive, but luxury resorts are not so cheap. USD is generally accepted, while Australian currency and traveler’s checks are generally not accepted for exchange. ATMs can be found everywhere.

Weather – Playa del Carmen is a place that is most visited during the high season. It has a tropical climate, with warm weather all year round, and a dry season from November to February.

Travel Insurance – It is very important to have a travel insurance policy when you come to Playa del Carmen, and if you go by motorcycle, it is mandatory that your policy covers you when using a motorcycle, in case you suffer an accident while using it.
